1-11-2017 Miniature Golf at Windschief

Windschief is a very nice, inexpensive, beach bar that serves great food and has great owners and staff.  No trip to Hopkins is complete without a trip there.

Olly built a miniature golf course and every Wed you can play unlimited putt putt golf + you get 3 drinks for 10 $ belize which is 5$ American.  It is a popular thing to do on Wed.

Olly built this whole course by himself without any plans...currently there are nine holes but it will be expanded to 18

1-10-2017 Mark and Eric head to Dangriga then Music at Driftwood at night

In Belize you have to go and pay bills in person also you have to go and get your passport stamped each month.  Mark and Eric drove together and handled errands in the most low stress way possible.

This little restaurant is very tasty, very cheap and has a good view of the river going through Dangriga

This is Dorla and Delia ... they have been friends since they were kids.  Tuesday is a fun night at Driftwood Bar and Pizza shack that is located on the north side of Hopkins.  Every Tuesday they have jam night and it is a popular place to hang out.

1-8-2017 Sunday Beach walk on Hopkins North Side

Sunday we often go on a beach walk on the Hopkins North Side.  It is about 4 miles round trip and you pass 8 places to eat and drink along the way.

Usually you pick up some people that are also doing a beach walk and you join forces.  Regina lives on an island but comes to Hopkins once a month.

At the very north end of the beach in Hopkins is a place that everybody calls Hawaii for some reason.  You often find fishermen here and this is the outlet of the fresh water marsh and there is a large freshwater lagoon up there too.

The sunsets are beautiful here.  This is the stream that is flowing to the ocean.

After the beach walk we ended up at Virge Kitchen for some more snacks

1-7-2017 Birthday party and music

Shannon is the owner of a great local restaurant called Luba Laruga.  He had a big party planned and it was shaping up to be a great time then a HUGE rainstorm hit with horizontal rains.  Luba Laruga is located right on the beach so we had to move on.

Shannon is a great guy and if you come to Hopkins be sure to eat seafood at Luba Laruga

Terry divides his time between Belize and Canada.  Lee on the right owns Jalapenos Bar where the music was playing

There was a packed crowd that night and the crowd ended up drinking them out of beer

Lee has built a nice kitchen and he specializes in smoked meat like ribs, brisket, pulled pork, etc.

1-6-2017 Greg and Rita's last night in Belize

Greg and Rita were some of the first outsiders to settle in Belize.  They operated an Inn very near Windschief Bar and they were fixtures there.

At first I thought Greg was quite the curmudgeon, but soon I realized he was a very good guy!

Greg and Rita originally came from Alaska and they just decided that they wanted to travel more.  They are heading to South America for a while and then to parts beyond.

1-1-2017 Sunday Beach Walk - New Year's Day Edition

At Jalapeno's BBQ & Grill, our first stop on this Sunday beach walk, we lucked into seeing some Jankunu performers!

It is traditional for these drummers and dancers to go around performing for tips on major holidays.

Somehow it was our first time seeing the Jankunu dancers - what a treat!

The costumes alone are something else! Cara googled it, and the dance originated during times of slavery, and the costumes
and dance (Jankunu/Junkanoo/John Canoe) were meant to mock the English slave owners.

Later that evening we went to a live music event at Swinging Armadillo's, which was a fundraiser for a friend's brother who
was in the hospital with complications from a burst appendix.

A decent amount of money was raised to help with the hospital bills, and everyone had a great time at the event.
